“Our lives revolve around the Ocean” – Nicola Hebert, today we get to learn more about the Designer behind Seaside Notions.
1. Tell us a little a little about Seaside Notions, what made you finally decide to take the plunge and go into PDF Pattern Designing?
I’ve been sewing since I was very young. I fell in love with it in my first Home Economics class; we made a pillow. Then I moved into quilting. When i had my first daughter thats when my world grew and it went from something I loved, to something I was passionate about. A friend introduced me to PDF patterns and I was hooked. I sewed up everything I could and was testing for everyone that would have me. I enjoyed the process and learned so much. Being a graphic designer, I knew that PDF creating and digital grading would come easy to me, it was the drafting that took a lot of time to learn. I have enjoyed every minute of it though, and I’m always itching for more time to sew! As a mother of four, that also works full time, time with my machine is a precious thing. Why I chose Seaside Notions is pretty clear if you know me, I am a prior Navy and my husband is currently active duty and serving on the USS Eisenhower as I write this. Our lives revolve around the ocean.
2. If you could describe pattern designing in ONE word. What would it be and why?
Expressive! I have no idea why that is the word that comes to mind, but I know that designing patterns allows me to show my personality, fashion sense, and my creative side all in one. It doesn’t get any better than that!
3. What’s the most gratifying memory of your designing journey?
There are two. The first is my first successful pattern, it was a big hit! It is so gratifying to see something that you dream up come to life. And then to see other peoples amazing interpretations of it is pretty special. Second, is the friends I have made. I love the fellow designers and testers I have come to know and Iove. The friendships that I have built are long lasting and special!
4. Who/what/where inspires you?
Who inspires me, first would be my Grandmother. She used to sew barbie clothes for me when I was a little girl. And of course, my designers friends who put up with my craziness, Melissa Prendergast from Bella Sunshine Designs and Kennis Wong from Itch to Stitch!
5. What is one sewing notion or tool that you just can’t live without?
My favorite sewing notion has to be european crochet bias tape and favorite tool is my Tula Pink snip scissors cause they are just so pretty!
6. Tell us something people might not know about you.
I am a thyroid cancer survivor, I was a police officer in the Navy, I was born in England and I use way to many emoticons! 😀
7. Are there any exciting news or sneak peeks you would like to share with our readers?
I have one new pattern in the works! For sneak peeks join the Seaside Notions Pattern Group 😉
8. If you were a box of cereal, what would you be and why?
Hmmm… I would be Wheatabix! A little taste of Britian that starts off a little dry but is always reliable and tasty with a teaspoon of sugar or two and totally softens into mush when you add milk or in my case a glass of wine!
Thank you so much Nicola, for spending a little time to share a bit of yourself with us! Looking forward to those free patterns!
